Swift, in October 1710, writes about what happens during a sudden shower in terms of how people respond to it: Susan takes down her linens from the line, Tories and Whigs "forget their feuds, and join to save their whigs; (a play on words regarding the British political parties). He goes on to discuss the incredible stench and filth floating up out o the sewers when there is a downpour. Swift goes so far as to describe the dead cats and butcher scraps that are made visible when the city's sewer system backs up and floods the street. The effect is to remove all the pretensions that the city dweller carries with themself, and to reduce them to the level a simple shower reduces them to, eliminating the false impression of a difference and forcing them to acknowledge their similar base needs and vulnerabilities.
