I know that Smart won the Seaton Prize for poetry on five consecutive occasion. And I know that the following extract is from a poem that won the award sometime between 1750 and 1806. I wonder if anyone could tell me if it is by Smart - it certainly expresses his sentiments.
Behold a bird's nest!
Mark it well, within, without.
No tool had he that wrought it; no knife to cut,
No nail to fix, no needle to insert,
No glue to join: his little beak was all.
And yet how neatly finished! What nice hand,
With every implement and means of art,
Could comp one another?
istance would be deeply appreciated.
